The Kindergarten GT Literacy Group has wrapped up their 20 Book Challenge! The most popular picks were:
Congratulations to Rex, Weston, Greyson and Charlie for completing the challenge and challenging themselves with their book choices! Kinder and First Grade GT Math Group wrapped up an extensive unit focusing on place value and adding/subtracting greater values. Students opted to demonstrate their growth by creating games to teach their peers the concepts they've learned. Enjoy some pictures of their planning below:
The GT Second Grade Math Group just wrapped up their unit exploring fractions in every way possible! Students created paper pizzas with parameters, organized their thinking with different fractions, learned how to use fractions with time, dipped their toes into percentages and much more. The evolution in their depth of understanding from the beginning to the end of the unit has been mind-blowing. I am so proud of how they dug in, asked difficult questions to ensure understanding and persevered in problem-solving. Their culminating activity involved creating fraction books to use as reference in their continued learning. Standards:
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. (CCSS: 2.G.A.3) The GT First Grade Literacy Group just finished a unit on "Charlotte's Web", and it was magical. "The ending was sad but beautiful." "I could not love a book more." These were just a couple of the sentiments in concluding the unit. Students read with buddies, read independently, engaged in a deep dive with complex vocabulary, made text-based connections and, most importantly, enjoyed this timeless story. The group also engaged in some exploratory activities such as creating their own web of words to describe themselves. We left this unit with so many hugs and smiles... that's the magic of a good book. Standards:
